Story of the "99" Flake
It is documented that there is an old article within a Cadburys works paper. It was documented that a sales man by the name of Mr Berry was at a sales conference where he had told a story of how the flake and ice cream come to be known as a "99"flake. In 1928 Mr Berry travelled north to County Durham, he noticed that the Italian ice cream manufacturers were trying to promote a new product to increase their sales. At the time there were mainly products such as the sandwich wafers, so the ice cream with the flake was soon tried out, the flake had to be cut in two pieces as it was too long and was then inserted into the vanilla ice cream and was called a "99". This soon caught on very fast and became a very popular product and still is the top selling product in an ice cream van to this day. Cadburys soon decided to produce a shorter flake as the demand soon grew, the Cadburys 99 flakes are now mostly sold as a pack of 144 flake fingers per box and remain the number one chocolate to be added to mainly the vanilla soft serve ice cream. The word "99" was used in the days of the Italian Monarchy where the King had a highly selective guard which had a count of 99 men, there after anything that was thought to be first class was known as "99" and this is one of the more likely possibilities of how the vanilla cone with a flake bacame known as a "99".
